coursework 8- FINAL PIECE

The final piece which took me 2 months is finally out!
I have really learned a lot about oil painting in these two months. I learned oil painting needs touch ups to make it smooth, Also, there is some parts that do not need to be smooth, the parts where there is special texture look rock.It is a fun experience to become a friend with oil paint, from not knowing it to becoming familier with it and finally being able to draw out delicate words with it.("the gift fom god" on the box which i thought it was impossible for me to acommplish but in the end hard work paid off and i was finally able to accomplish the impossible!)

Still, there was some sad time when the touch up ended up as a disaster, the wish of turning the painting more smooth end up mixing the colour together and there is not much contrast on the skin colour which is not very acceptable. In the end, i learnt a lesson, everything must be moderate, never overdo the touch up, and everything else.

Here is some description of my final work:

My final work is named a gift from god. In the center of the drawing is an exquisite box in which a cute infant is surrounded by petals of rose. There is a smooth and nice ribbon on the box cover as well as some beautifully printed words saying the infant is “a gift from god” These are to emphasize the baby’s preciousness. The baby has light complexion that suggests his western ancestry. Therefore he should be  born into a western family to enjoy a carefree and well-off life. However now he has been dropped onto the destitute African land.
Surrounding the baby is a group of poor African children who are all very skinny with no clothes on as their families cannot afford to buy them one. They are curiously looking at this gift from god,as they have never seen something so delicate and nicely decorated before. Some are reaching their hands out to feel the texture of the delicate box and rose petal inside, some are looking away worrying about how this baby would end up in this destitute land where he does not belong. In the backdrop ,there is a blurred scene of filthy trash and mud, further stressing the poor living condition of the unfortunate African children.
This drawing uses contrast between the baby and African children , such as the difference in their skin colour ,their facial expressions and their destinies. These are meant to showcase the heart-wrenching fact that when children are born ,they are all gifts from god, just like the cute infant. But poverty and hunger deprive them of the rights to enjoy the life of being treasured as gifts. They end up having a miserable life, stuck in the poverty trap like the African children. In this way, i want to arouse attention from people to care about the underprivileged children in the world, and try our best to provide them with the life that they deserve, a life that is filled with love and care.
